Agroecological principles and practices for cacao cultivation: A technical guide

This technical guide on agroecological principles and practices for cacao cultivation was developed under the Sustainable Farming in Tropical Asian Landscapes (SFITAL) Project to support field extension workers, farmer-leaders and local stakeholders working with smallholder cacao producers in the Philippines. The guide presents practical, field-based guidance on how agroecological approaches can be applied to cacao farming systems to improve environmental sustainability, productivity and resilience to climate variability.

The publication explains the key principles of agroecology and demonstrates how these can be integrated into cacao farm planning, soil and water management, shade management, pest and disease control, and harvesting practices. Emphasis is placed on the use of locally available resources, reduction of chemical inputs, enhancement of soil health, maintenance of agrobiodiversity and diversification of farm production systems. The guide also highlights the importance of combining scientific knowledge with farmers’ experience through participatory learning and co-creation of solutions.
