Since the establishment of the first Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in 1974, the network has expanded to 731 centres across India. Operating at the district level, these centres play a vital role in bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and farming practices, bringing research and innovation closer to farmers.

Today, their role extends well beyond technology demonstration and training. Many KVKs are helping create livelihoods, strengthen farmer institutions, support local enterprises and improve access to quality inputs. Yet much of this learning stays within individual KVK teams or a limited geography.

This book is the result of a collaboration between ICAR-ATARI Zone X (covering Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry) and CRISP, formalised through an MoU in 2025. It brings together 25 Good Practice Notes from KVKs, organised around four themes:

  • Promoting improved management practices
  • Skill development and employment promotion
  • Promoting value addition
  • Promoting quality production inputs

Each note goes beyond outcomes to describe the steps taken, the partnerships built, the challenges faced, the course corrections made and the lessons learned. The notes also reflect on how these successes can be sustained and scaled up. Success is presented as a collective effort involving farmers, host institutions, universities, line departments, civil society and other partners.

The book will be useful to extension professionals, researchers, policymakers and development organisations. It also invites more KVKs to document their experiences, reflect on their practice and turn valuable field learning into knowledge for the wider agricultural extension system.
